As one of Brazil’s leading maritime and logistics companies, Norsul made its presence felt at Intermodal South America, the largest logistics fair in Latin America. During the event, Norsul highlighted the key features of its fleet, including cement and chemical tankers, bulk carriers, and ocean convoys. The company used this platform to connect with visitors and business partners, emphasizing its core expertise: cabotage.
“We operate at the heart of the industry, which gives us a unique perspective to understand market shifts, analyze trends, and respond swiftly to support our clients’ growth. We’re seeing the logistics market heat up, with many partners eager to step up their game. Logistics is all about efficiency, technology, and process improvement, and Intermodal is the perfect place for all the key players in this chain to explore their options and opportunities to improve,” said Fabiano Lorenzi, Commercial Director.
Norsul’s modern, visually striking 96-square-meter booth near the entrance of São Paulo Expo drew in clients, partners, and logistics professionals, especially those focused on Brazilian cabotage, along with students keen to learn more.
The booth featured an interactive content showcase, allowing visitors to explore the company’s vessels and their capabilities via touchscreen. Each ship type had its own dedicated panel, offering an immersive experience into the world of cabotage and deeper insights into Norsul’s services. Company representatives were on hand to share additional information and insights about the vessels and Norsul’s logistics solutions.
A standout attraction was the scale model of the Pio Grande, a multipurpose ship built in 2012, designed to carry wind turbine blades. This vessel removes about 715 trucks from the roads per trip, each carrying roughly 42 tons. With a capacity of 30,000 tons spread across five holds, the Pio Grande is equipped with four cranes, each with a 30-ton lifting capacity.
Fabiano Lorenzi, Norsul’s Commercial Director, joined a panel hosted by the Brazilian Association of Cabotage Shipowners (ABAC) at the Intermodal Arena, a space dedicated to discussions on key issues in the transportation and logistics sectors. Alongside ABAC’s Executive Director, Luis Fernando Resano, Lorenzi discussed the growth of cabotage in Brazil, industry statistics, challenges, and the advantages of this mode of transport, providing context with Norsul’s current operations and future trends.
The panel covered various topics, including high port costs, limited port infrastructure, and challenges in connecting with other transport modes, as well as the broader obstacles facing Brazilian cabotage: “When you look at cargo transport in Brazil, 65% is done by road, while only 11% is by cabotage, according to BNDES data. We face two key challenges: supply and the need to transition from being just a transport service to becoming a comprehensive logistics solution for businesses, offering port-to-port delivery that’s increasingly customized to meet client needs.”
The discussion also touched on the use of alternative fuels in maritime transport, such as LNG, methanol, ethanol, and ammonia, along with the challenges of adopting green technology in Brazil. “Today, 50% of ships on order from shipyards include green fuel as an option. This concern is already shaping the industry, and fleets are being updated, but it’s a slow process,” Lorenzi noted.
